This professional development series, produced by KET in collaboration with the Kentucky Department for Mental Health and Mental Retardation Services, Prevent Child Abuse Kentucky, and the Kentucky Association of Sexual Assault Programs, answers many of the questions teachers have about addressing the issue of the suspected sexual abuse of a child. The three 20-minute programs address indicators of sexual abuse, teachers’ and caregivers’ legal responsibilities when abuse is suspected, and how adults can provide support for the victimized child.
- Recognizing and Responding—Most children do not report abuse, so it’s important to know what to look for. This program describes many of the warning signs of child sexual abuse, offers advice on how to respond to a student who reports abuse, and outlines the legal responsibilities of teachers and other professionals who suspect that a child is being abused—as well as what a teacher is not expected to do.
- Reporting and Investigating—examines all aspects of reporting child sexual abuse, including whom to contact and what happens when and after the abuse is reported, and addresses issues relating to the child’s family, the protection of the child, the safety of the reporting teacher, and the investigative process.
- Dealing with Long-Term Consequences—addresses how teachers can support the child during and after the prosecution of the abuser and examines why an abuser may not be brought to trial.
